A) Preparing your home for the new baby
The area designated for your baby should be clean, comfortable and safe.
If you can possibly manage to give your baby a room of her own. Try and make it as bright and cheerful as possible. Babies love clear, bright colours.
Babies love to watch things that move so it is a good idea to have an inexpensive mobile (as shown) hanging within his field of vision. All paint should be leadless.
Curtains should be made of light washable material lined to keep out the light when the baby is put to sleep.
The following is a list of required items although many items are a matter of taste and the size of your budget.
- A Cot – A crib isn’t absolutely essential. The baby can go straight into a cot. Special baby mattresses are firm and covered with waterproof material, not loose plastic sheeting as this is a hazard to the baby. No pillow is needed in the first year.
- Four cot blankets – The cellular type are warm and light in weight.
- Cot sheets – buy those of a warm flannelette material.
- Carry cot – This is a very useful item and the baby can even stay in it at night for the first few weeks.
- Bathing tub – choose a plastic type, making sure that the stand is absolutely steady.
- Two bath Towel – these should be strictly reserved for the baby’s use.
- Toilet box – the main items you will need in the baby’s toilet box are a baby hairbrush, supply of large curved safety pins, baby soap, baby shampoo, baby cream, petroleum jelly, talcum powder, cotton wool, swabs and a small bowl for swabs.
- Nappy bin – this is useful but not essential any plastic bucket with a lid will serve the purpose.
- Low feeding chair – ideally the chair will be without arms and will have a padded seat for comfort.
B) Baby’s Layette:
There are no set rules about a baby’s layette and the list below is intended only of a general guide.
- Two dozen nappies in good terry towelling or disposable nappies. More and more mothers today, use disposable nappies in order to save time and effort.
- Six pairs of plastic pants (if using towelling nappies), which should not be too tight round the baby’s thighs.
- Three vests wool is warm and soft.
- Three night – dresses in wool and cotton mixture.
